State is nothing like regional and super-regional. Because our region has grown so large, Georgia hosts 2 State events. This means that 2 teams from Georgia will advance on to the world competition and the two teams in 2nd place have the option to attend an open invitational. This past Hydrodynamics season consisted of state competitions at Georgia Tech and Georgia Gwinnett College.
While there are coach's meetings at regional and super-regional, the meeting for state laid out specifics what to do and what not to do. One big change was that parents could not hang out in the pits. Partially due to space but more importantly for the focus to be on the students when any judges should visit their table. Atlanta dignitaries were invited to assist with judging such as Atlanta City Councilmen and Georgia Tech Stakeholders. Since our region is one of the largest, the president of FLL even attended. It is once again a long day of students from ages 9-14 presenting in front of various judges and communicating all of their hard work. We were humbled, shocked, and proud to walk away with the research award at this level as we expected to participate and enjoy the opportunity. FLL is a process of allowing students to drive. As much as we the coaches want to take the reigns, it is far more rewarding when it is student driven.
